NIGERIA’S EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IN THIS PRESENT DAY; ARE WE THERE YET?

What is Education?

Education is the process of facilitating learning, or the acquisition of knowledge, skills, values, beliefs, and habits. Education comes in different methods such as teaching, training, storytelling, discussion and directed research. (Wikipedia)

Education goes beyond what takes places within the four walls of the classroom. A child gets the education from his experiences outside the school as well as from those within on the basis of these factors. These leads us to the types of education, namely,

  • Formal,
  • Informal and
  • Non-formal.

The Formal Educational System in Nigeria

Formal education or formal learning usually takes place in the premises of the school, where a person may learn basic, academic, or trade skills.

The introduction of the 6-3-3-4 Formal system of education in Nigeria, the recipient of the education would spend six years in primary school, three years in junior secondary school, three years in senior secondary school, and at least four years in a tertiary institution. (Vanguard News, 2012).

Nigeria’s Education System: Are we there yet? “Education is the bedrock of development.  But unfortunately, Education in Nigeria is bisected with myriads of problems”. (Odia and Omofonmwan, 2007).

The ills of the Nigeria Educational System; (my concerted opinion)

  • Poor Parenting / Guardian
  • Shaky educational background
  • Poor Preparation and Malpractices
  • Exploitation and Educational Standard
  • Orientation and Educational Standard
  • Poverty and Fall in Standard.

Prospect of Education in Nigeria: A Way Forward and Suggestions

  • Paradigm shift to educational globalization.
  • Shunning nepotism and family cronyism.
  • Abolishment of Organisational Influence on Educational Standard.
  • Appropriate funding for research and infrastructural development. In schools.
  • Encouraging vocational and technical education centres.
  • Quality and Affordability should not be negotiable in institutions.
